One-on-One Tutoring in Westchester County

By bringing education into your home, our tutors can better explain course material and revisit challenging subject matter to fill in any gaps in your child’s knowledge.
Our educators work one-one-one with students to make a connection, better understand the student’s individual educational needs, and accommodate accordingly with a customized education plan that is unique to the student.
Instead of acting like a teacher at the front of the classroom, our tutors act more like a “smart friend” who can reiterate source material and explain subject matter in a way that is easy to understand.

In group tutoring, students can come together to work as a team, brainstorm, bounce ideas off one another, and provide each other with the support and encouragement to confidently set and reach academic goals.

Private Tutors in Westchester County for All Subjects

New York Curriculum-Based Education
Although Westchester County has various public districts with different curriculums, each local district develops a curriculum based on standards established by The New York State Education Department.
These curriculum standards are maintained by all of our tutors. By working with your child’s curriculum, we can help fill any gaps in their knowledge, cover material before it’s taught, and provide them with the tools they need to better understand and more confidently approach subject matter as it is taught.
Westchester County is a County in the state of New York that holds a total of 48 public school districts. Some of these are part of the Union Free School District, while others are part of the Central School District.
These districts have slightly differing curriculums but are held to the same standards, which is why we work with your child’s specific school curriculum. We revisit any challenging subject matter to explain it in a way that is easier for a student to understand so that they can keep up with their peers and take control of their educational journey.

Orton Gillingham Reading Specialist

Reading Specialist
About
For the past decade, Jan had her own private reading remediation practice in Fairfield County and the Hamptons (summers). She started as a public high school English teacher of junior English (both advanced and basic levels), before shifting to become a community college lecturer, then becoming a learning center reading specialist using the Orton-Gillingham approach before becoming a private reading specialist.
Jan holds two Ivy League degrees, was credentialed as an award-winning high school English teacher, and trained in Connecticut’s only Orton Gillingham institution where she worked directly under a Fellow, who later sat on the Academy’s Board of Directors. In addition to learning the OG approach, Jan used the Wilson Reading System, FUNdations, SPIRE, and the Language Tool Kits.
The Orton GIllingham approach has been validated by the test of time– for 75 years, diagnosing educational psychologists have recognized that it is the best means of remediating diagnosed dyslexia. Dyslexia affects 15% of the population with reading challenges comprising 85% of Special Education referrals. However, the public schools have not conquered this problem, as the typical SpEd student enters the program reading two grade levels behind his peers, and he exits the program still reading two grade levels behind his peers. The Orton Gilliingham approach actually closes skill gaps, rather than simply making progress.
Among the attributes that make the OG approach unique are its emotional sensitivity and its customization. The Orton Gillingham practitioner creates a lesson for that individual’s specific needs and skill levels in order for him/her to achieve 80% or better accuracy. During the lesson, the specialist adjusts the lesson’s administration accordingly to realize that result. Allowing such a curated sense of competency to emerge (albeit in a vacuum) builds a newfound sense of confidence in written-language capability for the dyslexic student. Also, the Orton Gillingham approach, because it is not a program (pre-scripted) or a one-size fits all curriculum, permits the instructional intensity necessary to closing deficits. There is no need for covering ground already familiar to the student, and there is the freedom to bear down on those skills eluding the student.

Svetlana Vlahopoulos recently joined the Math Department of The Ursuline School. Svetlana earned a Master of Science in 5 years and began teaching at the age of 22. When she moved to the USA, she had an opportunity to further her education and entered a pre-med program at Hunter College. Although she did not attend medical school, the pre-med program deepened her knowledge of science and math and helped her realize that her true passion is teaching. Her mother always told her, “One who is a teacher is always a teacher,” Svetlana came back to teaching, but she believes that she is also learning from her students.
Svetlana knows that our DNA’s unique combinations make us all different and it is important to recognize that we not only look different but also learn differently. To make learning desirable, Svetlana always looks for exciting teaching methods, so she can provide her students with individualized learning experiences.

“We noticed in grade 5 that our son was having difficulty in math and was overwhelmed taking tests. A friend’s daughter was having great success with Prep Academy Tutors and recommended we contact them to help support his learning. Now he is a different student. Prep Academy Tutors have helped our son get focused, stay motivated and develop strong study and test skills. They use the right combination of encouragement, accountability and challenge and as a result our son’s academic achievements and self-confidence have increased dramatically. We consider Prep Academy Tutors all part of our son’s success team and would highly recommend them.”
“I cannot say enough about Prep Academy Tutors. This is our third year with them and they continue to provide us with experienced, knowledgeable, reliable and personable tutors. Our 15 year old son was diagnosed with a Language Learning disability 3 years ago and since working with Prep Academy Tutors the trend line is up. His self-confidence, ability to organize, test writing fears and marks have all improved. Our son also has a very busy co-curricular calendar and Prep Academy Tutors has been amazing when it comes to flexibility and working together with us to find what works best for all. Prep Academy Tutors also works hard to find the right personality fit for each Student and Tutor. Lastly, having the tutors come to our home is wonderful!”
Prep Academy Tutors has been an outstanding resource for us this year as we all try to navigate this new normal. Their process, and their tutors, have both been top notch and allowed us to give our children the additional support that they need during this time.
Proud Pre-K & 1st Grade Bronxville Mom
In this super stressful time, it gives me much calm knowing my son’s learning is in great hands. We are using both in-person and virtual Prep Academy tutors to supplement my son’s 4th Grade curriculum and I am confident that he is not only not missing a step, but authentically engaged & thriving. I plan on continuing with Prep Academy long after at-home learning is done.
Happy 4th Grade Eastchester Mom
Our tutor from Prep Academy Tutors has had a tremendous impact on our young children’s interest in reading, writing and math basics. They look forward to seeing her twice a week and we’ve never seen our kids so engaged in learning both with her and at school. It’s not just a supplement to school but we also feel it enhances their experience in the classroom.

Our fourth grade son’s tutor is fantastic! He is enthusiastic and very motivated to help our son tackle very complex math concepts. Our son really looks forward to the tutoring sessions and has become more engaged in his schoolwork as a result.
Delighted 4th Grade Larchmont Family
Prep Academy Tutors helped us structure a small learning pod of first grade children. They helped us work through the details of group size, frequency of tutoring, curriculum and finding a tutor that connects well with the children. The kids enjoy and look forward to every tutor time.
