The ACT is another standardized test used by colleges to make admissions decisions. The ACT is administered by ACT. The ACT tests students on material associated with the standard high school curriculum.
The enhanced ACT has fewer questions and different timings from the legacy version. Compare current-format practice tests before choosing an exam. Superscoring policies and admissions requirements vary by college, so check each institution’s current guidance.

Current ACT format
- Core testing time: 2 hours 5 minutes for English, Math and Reading. Optional sections, breaks and check-in add time.
- English: 50 questions in 35 minutes.
- Math: 45 questions in 50 minutes.
- Reading: 36 questions in 40 minutes.
- Science add-on: 40 questions in 40 minutes.
- Writing add-on: one essay prompt in 40 minutes.
- Composite score range: 1–36, calculated from English, Math and Reading. Science and Writing do not enter this Composite.
- The national ACT offers optional Science and Writing. In school-day testing, your state or district may choose which sections students take. Check the requirements for your administration and intended colleges.
- A permitted calculator may be used on the Math test only.
- Paper and online options are available; confirm local availability and the format of your booking.
