Hello prospective families! I am currently completing a Bachelor of Education degree in the Intermediate/Senior program with teachables in English and History. Originally, I went to school for Psychology and Social Development Studies, with a minor in Dance and History, graduating in 2007 and spending the next six years working in the social work field. Unfortunately, this career was not for me and I moved on to spend fifteen years in retail management, a career that was very fulfilling until COVID occurred.
Over the course of the pandemic, I did a lot of soul searching and decided to follow my dreams of becoming a teacher. My passion is reading; I read 150+ books a year, and am constantly growing my repertoire of literature by joining several book clubs and surrounding myself with friends who share similar passions. For the last four years, I worked on a literature certification in my free time to be able to make this dream a reality.
Other than reading, I spend my time with my two boys and my husband who I adore. My boys both play hockey; my older one at the competitive level. When not at the rink or reading, I spend my free time running. I have been an avid runner for the last six years, training for a variety of races. I have run four marathons, and will get my second world major star at the Chicago Marathon this year.
I find that the biggest reason I am excited about my future teaching degree is the prospect of working with students and helping them expand both their understanding as well as their appreciation of English and History. I feel that I am well positioned to identify where students may be struggling with the material and work with them to find a strategy that will make the material make sense. Open dialogue creates opportunities for knowledge transmission. Reflection is key to learning as it requires deep critical thinking about one’s beliefs and experiences. Upon reflection I discover new insights of self, practice and areas for growth. I believe I cannot effectively teach others if I am not evolving beyond my current mindset. Walter Lippmann says, “Education should create an interest in all persons in furthering the general good”. I believe teaching is one of the most important professions in society because teachers directly shape the future of our world by shaping the children who will create this future. Being reminded that creating good human beings is the larger goal of teaching grounds me in my practice.

I’m Mya, and I’m studying to become a PhysEd and Science teacher! I love working with students, helping them learn new things and have fun while doing it. I’ve got a background in Kinesiology, which means I’m really into health, fitness, and staying active.

When I’m not studing im usually playing basketball, rugby, or exploring the outdoors. I love hanging out with friends and family and going hiking, i also ejoy watching live music and going to concerts. I’m big on teamwork and leadership, which is why I’ve been involved in lots of clubs, teams, and working in differnt youth programs. Nelooka is currently an Occasional Teacher working with the Durham District School Board. She is qualified to teach Primary and Junior, and received her Bachelor of Education in 2020 from the University of Ottawa. Prior to completing her B.Ed, Nelooka completed her Bachelor of Arts at York University. Since graduating, Nelooka has completed some additional qualifications, such as Special Education (Part One) along with Teaching Students with Communication Disorders (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Along with her teaching experience, Nelooka has 10+ years of working in the childcare field, working both in the public and private sector.

As a Tamil-Canadian woman, Nelooka is passionate about inclusive, anti-racist, and globally responsive education. She is also focused on ensuring that her teaching spaces build empathetic and caring communities of learning. Hi! My name is Raisa. I am currently teaching grade 1/2 French Immersion with the Toronto Catholic District School Board. I majored in French Studies at Glendon College of York University. I then completed a 2-year Bachelor of Education degree at the same campus, specializing in Primary/Junior (K-6), in 2019. The majority of my experience comes from working with grades K-3 and grade 5. Outside of the classroom, I have tutored students of all ages as a Piano Teacher and worked on the Royal Conservatory of Music Program with several of them. In addition, I have worked as a senior camp counsellor at a French summer camp and have been in charge of arranging various educational and fun activities with students.

My philosophy of teaching includes providing a safe and welcoming environment for students to think and to ask questions, to grow academically, to be creative problem solvers, and to develop meaningful personal connections. I set expectations and goals for students, but also give them the chance to explore their interests and the curriculum. I am Sanya and I have been an OCT certified Secondary School Math teacher for almost 20 years with the Toronto District School Board.

My passion for empowering others to reach their highest potential was one of the main reasons why I decided to become an educator, and specifically a Teacher of Mathematics, as Math is one of those subjects that many people have a lot of psychological baggage around; filled to the brim with limiting beliefs due to experiences they had in their formative years of learning. Because of this, my mission is to inspire, empower and support my students in overcoming any limiting beliefs they may have about their capacity to be, not only be successful math students, but to excel! You see, I believe that we all have an Inner Genius that resides within us, and once we are able to connect with that Inner Genius, we become empowered to reach our full potential.

My teaching style is student-directed, engaging and focuses on cultivating an empowered and positive mindset, especially in the face of challenges or failures; which I encourage my students see as opportunities for deeper learning and competency. I specialize in English and history. Tareque hopes video games as course material can lead to new ways of learning and more representation of underrepresented skills. Tareque also has TEFL/TESOL certification, and taught ESL/EFL to numerous students, ranging from young children to seniors.
