Curriculum-Based At-Home Education
Our tutors provide in-home tutoring in Durham that aligns with the current curriculum so that our students can apply what they learn through in-home education in the classroom. While we do have tutors specializing in specific subjects, we also have upper-level tutors who are well versed in curriculum material and provide one-on-one education to help students better grasp source material covered in the classroom.
In fact, we aim to cover source material before it is covered in the classroom so that our students can see the parallels between what they are learning at home and what they are learning at school so that they can approach new topics with confidence.
Durham Region is under the Durham District School Board (DDSB), which facilitates the education of over 70,000 students. This school board covers the rural communities of Uxbridge, Brock, and Scugog, and the major townships of Ajax, Whitby, Pickering, and Oshawa. Other prevalent school boards of the region include the Durham Catholic District School Board. Both cover the curriculum based on the Ontario Ministry of Education.
We cover curriculum material in our private tutoring sessions to help students approach new topics covered in the classroom with confidence and ease. If your child has any gaps in knowledge, we ensure comprehension by returning to difficult topics.
Preparation For Standardized Testing

Enrichment & Remedial Programs
Enrichment Programs
Students who are looking to get ahead or learn more about a subject of interest can benefit from the fulfilling experience of our enrichment programs. Our enrichment programs are available for students aged 4 to 24.
Our enrichment program can be an enriching experience for students who are seeking a new challenge, want to learn more about a given subject, or are interested in learning a new language. The reality is that not all courses in standardized schools cover specific points of interest for students, so we provide courses that allow children to pursue their varying interests and hobbies in an educational setting.
Remedial Programs
Sometimes students struggle to get their education back on track, which is why we offer remedial programs in Durham to help give these students the tools they need to regain control of their academics. If your child has any gaps in knowledge, we revisit their obstacles to both improve their comprehension and provide them with the moral support to succeed academically.
We offer two remedial programs:
Direct Instruction Reading Program: The Direct Instruction Reading Mastery Remedial Program is designed to suit the unique needs of students who are struggling with reading and writing. We’ve catered this program towards helping children overcome literacy challenges by creating scripted, clear, and controlled lesson plans to keep material straight forward.
The Wilson Reading System: The Wilson Reading System is geared towards students with dyslexia or a language-based disability. The system helps students to retain information and develop comprehension by focusing on sensory understanding through reading, sound, and listening.

Senior English Teacher Candidate
About
Hello prospective families! I am currently completing a Bachelor of Education degree in the Intermediate/Senior program with teachables in English and History. Originally, I went to school for Psychology and Social Development Studies, with a minor in Dance and History, graduating in 2007 and spending the next six years working in the social work field. Unfortunately, this career was not for me and I moved on to spend fifteen years in retail management, a career that was very fulfilling until COVID occurred.
Over the course of the pandemic, I did a lot of soul searching and decided to follow my dreams of becoming a teacher. My passion is reading; I read 150+ books a year, and am constantly growing my repertoire of literature by joining several book clubs and surrounding myself with friends who share similar passions. For the last four years, I worked on a literature certification in my free time to be able to make this dream a reality.
Other than reading, I spend my time with my two boys and my husband who I adore. My boys both play hockey; my older one at the competitive level. When not at the rink or reading, I spend my free time running. I have been an avid runner for the last six years, training for a variety of races. I have run four marathons, and will get my second world major star at the Chicago Marathon this year.
I find that the biggest reason I am excited about my future teaching degree is the prospect of working with students and helping them expand both their understanding as well as their appreciation of English and History. I feel that I am well positioned to identify where students may be struggling with the material and work with them to find a strategy that will make the material make sense. I look forward to working with you and helping to expand each student’s potential.

About
Hello! My name is Laura. I am a graduate from Ontario Tech University in Oshawa.
My academic path has lead me down many different roads and I have gained experience in many subjects as a result. I have studied Biological Anthropology, Archaeology, Classical History, World History, and Forensic Science, all of which I have a strong passion for that I hope to pass on to my students.
In my spare time, I love to read and write. I particularly enjoy YA fantasy novels, and one of my life goals is to write my own YA novel some day! I go rock climbing and love to swim to stay active, but I am guilty of spending a lot of time playing video games (which actually teach a lot of useful skills!).
I look forward to helping students not only understand course material but actually enjoy learning. That is what matters most in education.

About
I believe in holistic education that engages learners cognitive, physical, emotional and social needs in an intimate classroom community. I became an educator so I can create the inclusive environment that I longed for as a child where students diverse needs and strengths are welcomed. Compassion is at the heart of my practice. Creating a culture that is safe and supportive helps students feel as though they can take risks and make mistakes because success and failure are merely viewed as information as opposed to reward and punishment. I aim to educate in a manner reflecting the diverse identities and lived experiences of all students through culturally sensitive pedagogy.
I aspire to foster learner’s social emotional development. At the heart of this growth is validating learner’s feelings and experiences, as well as teaching the essential relational skill of problem solving. I believe there are six fundamental elements of problem solving shared between educator and learner: (1) listening to student’s feelings and needs; (2) summarizing their point of view; (3) teacher expressing their feelings and needs; (4) inviting the class/student to brain-storm with the teacher to find a solution; (5) writing down all ideas without judgment; and (6) together deciding which ideas will be used and how to implement them.
Assessment is as a pathway of communication between educator and learner. Students must clearly understand expectations so they can be actively involved in achieving these goals and feel a sense of responsibility over their learning. I invite students to be active participants in their educational journey (thinking, discussing, questioning and creating). I believe assessment practices need to be fair, transparent and equitable for all. Providing ongoing descriptive feedback that is clear, specific, actionable, timely and varied is essential to support learning and achievement. This feedback will develop students’ self-assessment and reflection skills to enable them to evaluate their learning, set personalized goals and plan next steps.
Teaching is a process of learning from students, colleagues, parents, and the larger community. This enduring growth is an avenue through which I pursue my goal of being a lifelong learner. Open dialogue creates opportunities for knowledge transmission. Reflection is key to learning as it requires deep critical thinking about one’s beliefs and experiences. Upon reflection I discover new insights of self, practice and areas for growth. I believe I cannot effectively teach others if I am not evolving beyond my current mindset. Walter Lippmann says, “Education should create an interest in all persons in furthering the general good”. I believe teaching is one of the most important professions in society because teachers directly shape the future of our world by shaping the children who will create this future. Being reminded that creating good human beings is the larger goal of teaching grounds me in my practice.

About
Luminous Greetings!
I am Sanya and I have been an OCT certified Secondary School Math teacher for almost 20 years with the Toronto District School Board.
My passion for empowering others to reach their highest potential was one of the main reasons why I decided to become an educator, and specifically a Teacher of Mathematics, as Math is one of those subjects that many people have a lot of psychological baggage around; filled to the brim with limiting beliefs due to experiences they had in their formative years of learning. Because of this, my mission is to inspire, empower and support my students in overcoming any limiting beliefs they may have about their capacity to be, not only be successful math students, but to excel! You see, I believe that we all have an Inner Genius that resides within us, and once we are able to connect with that Inner Genius, we become empowered to reach our full potential.
My teaching style is student-directed, engaging and focuses on cultivating an empowered and positive mindset, especially in the face of challenges or failures; which I encourage my students see as opportunities for deeper learning and competency. I also believe it is imperative that students are proactive in their learning experience and advocate for themselves to ensure they receiving the support and clarity they require in order to optimize their learning experience and academic outcomes.
It is my pleasure and privilege to be among the exceptional educators at Prep Academy Tutors and to have the opportunity to provide engaging, student-focused and effective learning experiences that will lead to academic excellence for the students that we serve.

Reviews
My Daughter who is in Grade 7 misses a lot of school due to on going medical appointments and was struggling with Math. I decided to hire a Tutor and chose ‘Prep Academy Tutors of Durham’, and I made the right decision. We had a very skilled high-level personable Math Tutor come to our home and spend an hour with our Daughter teaching her from the basic math principles to the level curriculum. Honestly it all clicked rather quickly for our Daughter and she gained a ton of confidence throughout the lessons. We had a very enthusiastic tutor are great role models who worked so well with our Daughter and the results were transformative. Shortly thereafter, our Son was writing aptitude test for the Canadian Military. It is primarily the Grade 10 & 11 curriculum, but He felt like He needed a solid review. Prep Academy Tutors is flexible enough to provide Tutors for a short tenure. We hired the Tutor for our Son for 5 sessions. He really gained a lot. The review work was perfect as the Tutor came prepared with actual sample tests like what the military uses. We are proud to say He passed the test with flying colours, and I don’t think He would have been so successful without his Tutor. We couldn’t be happier with Prep Academy Tutors of Durham. We highly recommend them and Marissa is delightful to work with. She is very organized, pleasant d and her customer service is second to none. Honestly you will not be disappointed, and either will your Child!
