Certified Tutors in the Durham Region
Our Durham tutors are certified and trained teachers who maintain a high standard of education. The tutors at Prep Academy Tutors educate with the curriculum in mind to ensure that your child is being taught material that parallels what they are learning in the classroom. This way, they can apply their knowledge to succeed in school. Class sizes in the Durham region continue to grow, eliminating teachers’ ability to provide students with one-on-one attention to help them achieve personal academic success. Prep Academy Tutors provide teachers with the ability to work one-on-one with students or in small groups to make learning an experience that is rewarding and enjoyable for both the tutor and student. Even as class sizes get larger, it is harder and harder for certified teachers to get jobs with the board. Prep Academy Tutors provides teachers with an alternative option to stretch their teaching muscles, form relationships with students, and educate individuals who learn in different ways. Find a local tutor in Durham today. We have tutors across the region in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and Clarington.

Our tutors provide in-home tutoring in Durham that aligns with the current curriculum so that our students can apply what they learn through in-home education in the classroom. While we do have tutors specializing in specific subjects, we also have upper-level tutors who are well versed in curriculum material and provide one-on-one education to help students better grasp source material covered in the classroom.
In fact, we aim to cover source material before it is covered in the classroom so that our students can see the parallels between what they are learning at home and what they are learning at school so that they can approach new topics with confidence.
Durham Region is under the Durham District School Board (DDSB), which facilitates the education of over 70,000 students. This school board covers the rural communities of Uxbridge, Brock, and Scugog, and the major townships of Ajax, Whitby, Pickering, and Oshawa. Other prevalent school boards of the region include the Durham Catholic District School Board. Both cover the curriculum based on the Ontario Ministry of Education.
We cover curriculum material in our private tutoring sessions to help students approach new topics covered in the classroom with confidence and ease. If your child has any gaps in knowledge, we ensure comprehension by returning to difficult topics.

Enrichment & Remedial Programs
Enrichment Programs
Students who are looking to get ahead or learn more about a subject of interest can benefit from the fulfilling experience of our enrichment programs. Our enrichment programs are available for students aged 4 to 24.
Our enrichment program can be an enriching experience for students who are seeking a new challenge, want to learn more about a given subject, or are interested in learning a new language. The reality is that not all courses in standardized schools cover specific points of interest for students, so we provide courses that allow children to pursue their varying interests and hobbies in an educational setting.
Remedial Programs
Sometimes students struggle to get their education back on track, which is why we offer remedial programs in Durham to help give these students the tools they need to regain control of their academics. If your child has any gaps in knowledge, we revisit their obstacles to both improve their comprehension and provide them with the moral support to succeed academically.
We offer two remedial programs:
Direct Instruction Reading Program: The Direct Instruction Reading Mastery Remedial Program is designed to suit the unique needs of students who are struggling with reading and writing. We’ve catered this program towards helping children overcome literacy challenges by creating scripted, clear, and controlled lesson plans to keep material straight forward.
The Wilson Reading System: The Wilson Reading System is geared towards students with dyslexia or a language-based disability. The system helps students to retain information and develop comprehension by focusing on sensory understanding through reading, sound, and listening.

Maria L.
Grades
Kindergarten, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Primary/Junior Teacher Candidate
About
Hello! My name is Maria, and I’m passionate about providing students with a supportive learning environment where they can confidently reach their academic potential. I have over 6 years of teaching experience, which includes Early Childhood Education, mentoring Queen’s Arts and Science online students, in addition to my current experience within the Primary/Junior division in Durham District School Board. I am currently a teacher candidate at Lakehead’s Bachelor of Education program, specializing in the Primary/Junior division. Prior to pursuing my Bachelor of Education, I completed my Bachelor of Arts in History and a Certificate in Academic Writing from Queen’s University.
My philosophy of education is that all children are unique and must have a stimulating educational environment where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. It is my desire to create this type of environment where students can grow into their full potential. Through my related teaching experience, I believe that there are five essential elements that are conducive to learning. 1) The teacher’s role is to act as a guide. 2) Students must have access to hands-on activities. 3) Students should be able to have choices and let their curiosity direct their learning. 4) Students need the opportunity to practice skills in a safe and inclusive environment. 5) Technology must be incorporated into their school days. I am a firm believer in providing students with differentiated instruction to accommodate their special learning needs, thereby helping them reach their academic goals successfully.
I’m passionate about literacy, mental health, wellbeing, and social justice. When I’m not in the classroom, you can find me with my family or with a book and my cats. I like to cook healthy international recipes, spend time outdoors, running, or taking photos of nature. I look forward to working together with you.

About
My educational philosophy encompasses many things; however, it heavily focuses on the aspects of care work that are involved in teaching and being an educator. I believe that education is not just about academic achievement and curriculum expectations—it is about far more than that. Being an educator means caring for students and being the support, they need, in order to move on to the next chapter of their lives. Being an educator means preparing students, not just academically but also for the real world. I believe in teaching students by modeling positive behaviours, showing them love, compassion, and empathy—showing them that that they are loved and cared for. I truly and honestly believe that a teacher who does not try to put themselves in the shoes of their students, is limited in their ability to help students and impart knowledge.
My teaching philosophy, more specifically in terms of educational practices and strategies, is in line with holistic teaching. I believe in teaching the whole student, about the world at large. I also think students benefit most when they are taught from the approach of being lifelong learners. Rather than having an end goal in education, it is beneficial to show students that learning is a lifelong process for everyone, for students and teachers alike. Furthermore, I believe in dialogic teaching, where students are given autonomy and a voice in the learning process. They are shown that their opinions matter and that they are trusted to have control over their own learning. This also teaches students to take ownership and responsibility over their own learning, taking away from the traditional authoritative classroom dynamic, and contributing toward the more progressive student-centred classroom dynamic.
I am also a strong believer in differentiated instruction—providing students with an array of learning and assessment opportunities, so that they may succeed within the educational system. Differentiated instruction is also connected to adaptation and modification of learning materials so that students may work toward common goals and expectations, while having their needs met. I think technology is also a great way to ensure that students are receiving equitable learning opportunities. With all the technology and resources available there is no reason why students shouldn’t receive the assistance they need, whether it be accommodations or assistive technology.

Reviews
My Daughter who is in Grade 7 misses a lot of school due to on going medical appointments and was struggling with Math. I decided to hire a Tutor and chose ‘Prep Academy Tutors of Durham’, and I made the right decision. We had a very skilled high-level personable Math Tutor come to our home and spend an hour with our Daughter teaching her from the basic math principles to the level curriculum. Honestly it all clicked rather quickly for our Daughter and she gained a ton of confidence throughout the lessons. We had a very enthusiastic tutor are great role models who worked so well with our Daughter and the results were transformative. Shortly thereafter, our Son was writing aptitude test for the Canadian Military. It is primarily the Grade 10 & 11 curriculum, but He felt like He needed a solid review. Prep Academy Tutors is flexible enough to provide Tutors for a short tenure. We hired the Tutor for our Son for 5 sessions. He really gained a lot. The review work was perfect as the Tutor came prepared with actual sample tests like what the military uses. We are proud to say He passed the test with flying colours, and I don’t think He would have been so successful without his Tutor. We couldn’t be happier with Prep Academy Tutors of Durham. We highly recommend them and Marissa is delightful to work with. She is very organized, pleasant d and her customer service is second to none. Honestly you will not be disappointed, and either will your Child!
