Anthony (AJ) L.B.

Anthony (“AJ”) La Barca is a Ph.D. student in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. He holds a B.S. in Physics & Astronomy with minors in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Music from the University of Rochester. AJ has extensive experience tutoring and teaching at the middle-school, high-school, and collegiate levels, serving as a teaching assistant in both physics and aerospace engineering courses. Proficient across math, physics, computer science, and engineering topics, he strives to make complex concepts accessible and engaging for students of all levels. Outside of academia, AJ is an avid rock climber, skier, and photographer, often combining his love for science and the outdoors through astrophotography.

FRANCIS S.

Francis has a Master’s degree in Applied Math from York University. He is a former instructor for Calculus (MATH 265) at the University of Calgary. Francis has worked with a wide range of students to help them improve their math skills. From learning about fractions in middle school to taking the definite integral in a university calculus course. He views math tutoring as both a profession and a hobby of his.
Francis has a growth mindset and believes that every student can reach their full potential given the right support.

 

 

 

 

Kobby P.

Kobby Paintsil has lived in London for 8 years and attended a French high school, making him comfortable in both English and French. Currently, Kobby is in his final year at Western University, studying One Health and Pathology, and hopes to enter graduate school for public health or epidemiology. Kobby enjoys volunteer work and has contributed many hours to his community, giving him a well-rounded background in community service. Volunteering is how he first started teaching, and he’s had the opportunity a tutor for various local groups, such as the Ghanaian Association of London and Middlesex and the London Public Library. These experiences have helped Kobby build the skill set necessary to be an effective teacher. In his free time, Kobby likes to read and listen to music, and can talk about comic books for an unreasonable amount of time.

TANYA B.

Tanya has worked in and around education for nearly 15 years, teaching workshops within the classroom as well as after school programs for students of all ages. Her specialties lie in the sciences, mathematics, arts, history and social studies. Carrying a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto, she strives to inspire deep thinking within her students and encourage them to draw connections between their learning and real world problems.

At this stage in her career, Tanya is working towards obtaining her Masters of Education in Curriculum & Pedagogy at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). She hopes to one day make change within the education system in a way that incorporates more student inquiry and play-based learning. In her teaching, she is able to create such learning opportunities by building relationships with her students and leveraging their interests in their practice.

Outside of teaching, Tanya is also the founder of Mystical Games Academy – a company dedicated to teaching life skills to youth through tabletop roleplaying games (ie. Dungeons & Dragons). In doing so, she creates imaginative worlds and scenarios that challenge her players to problem solve in a fun and collaborative way. They are building lifelong skills through immersive storytelling and gameplay!

 

Danish J.

Danish is a recent graduate of the University of Western Ontario, where he completed his Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a major in Finance and a minor in Data Science. He was awarded the Outstanding International Student Scholarship and participated in programs such as the Scotiabank Career Accelerator and RBC Thinking Virtual Workshop. Danish has applied his academic knowledge through internships in finance, consulting, and research, gaining experience in data analysis, financial modeling, and strategic problem-solving.

Tasfia is an experienced STEM tutor with over four years of tutoring experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, specializing in secondary and post-secondary mathematics and sciences. She has worked with more than 100 students across diverse curricula, including the Ontario curriculum, International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement (AP), Danforth’s MaST, and Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs. Tasfia has extensive experience supporting students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), skillfully adapting her teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and ensure comprehensive understanding and skill mastery. She is a compassionate, friendly, and adaptive educator with a special interest in cognitive psychology who approaches learning from a trauma-informed perspective.

 

GAVIN O.

Gavin graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics degree in 2022 and a Master of Quantitative Finance degree in 2024. He completed his tutor training with the CRLA in 2019 while working as a full-time math tutor at Centennial College. Gavin has worked as a part-time tutor since 2022 and has worked with hundreds of students in grade levels ranging from elementary to high school to college-level math students, and has experience working with students with disabilities and who speak English as a second language. In addition to working as a private tutor, in 2022 Gavin worked as a teacher for Algorithmics Waterloo where he instructed students on math competitions, Grade 11 Functions and Python programming. Furthermore, he has contributed to artistic projects that use cartoons and illustration to make math concepts more intuitive and engaging. Through these experiences Gavin has developed a passion for making math instruction participatory and engaging. ENG: William is a McGill graduate in Computer Science & Linguistics with 5+ years of experience tutoring a variety of subjects, specializing in Math. In CEGEP, he was a peer tutor in the Music Department at Vanier College, helping fellow students understand Music Theory and Ear Training, and he worked for a private company tutoring students from elementary school to CEGEP alike in STEM topics, French, and English. He discovered his love for teaching as a young teenager helping his neighbour’s son with French, and finds fulfillment in seeing his students become more confident and feel proud of their improvement. William brings an encouraging and positive approach to tutoring, and focuses on developing his students’ independence and confidence in their problem-solving skills. Marah is a McGill University graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and eight years of tutoring experience. She offers support in mathematics and science subjects, including Calculus, Linear Algebra, Physics, and general Science, helping students strengthen their understanding and improve performance.

Her tutoring career began at John Abbott College where professors recognized her academic excellence and recommended her to assist other students. She was later officially hired by the college to tutor math, chemistry, and physics, gaining two years of daily hands-on experience with students. Since then, she has continued tutoring independently, working with learners across different academic levels and consistently receiving very positive feedback.

Valentina is an experienced and versatile tutor holding an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with a minor in Biophysics from the University of Ottawa. She specializes in teaching Math and Science from the elementary level through high school, including Chemistry, Biology, Calculus, and Advanced Functions.
Immigrating to Canada from Colombia when she was 13 years old, she was impacted by the amazing teachers that eased the transition into a new country and ignited a passion for knowledge in her, inspiring her to offer the same level of encouragement, clarity and curiosity in her lessons. Throughout her university career, she worked with several on campus organizations to mentor younger year students and provide free English lessons to newcomers, leading her to start offering tutoring services in 2020. Her teaching style is flexible and tailored to each student’s individual needs, with a strong focus on building confidence as they master new concepts. In her free time, Valentina enjoys open water swimming and playing the flute and piano.
