William C.

Bill is a North Carolina educator, award-winning journalist, and experienced communications professional who brings a lifelong passion for learning and storytelling to every tutoring session.

Before becoming a teacher, Bill spent more than 20 years as a newspaper reporter and communications specialist, covering education, courts, business, government, and public policy for publications including North Carolina Lawyers Weekly, Pacific Business News in Honolulu and Inside Business, the Hampton Roads Business Journal.

His work earned numerous journalism awards, and he later served as Communications and Public Relations Coordinator for one of North Carolina’s largest business and litigation law firms, where he translated complex legal issues into clear, engaging language for clients, attorneys, and the public.

Bill’s transition into education was a natural one. As a special education teacher at Enloe Magnet High School in Raleigh, he discovered that the most rewarding part of teaching was building relationships with students and helping them realize they were capable of more than they believed. He especially enjoys working one-on-one, where he can tailor lessons to each student’s learning style, celebrate victories, and help students develop the confidence to tackle new challenges independently.

Whether a student needs support with reading comprehension, writing, English, social studies, organization or study skills, Bill believes learning should be encouraging, engaging, and personalized. His background as a professional writer gives him a unique ability to explain difficult concepts in ways that make sense, while his classroom experience helps him meet students where they are and build on their strengths.

Bill is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville and an avid reader. Bill enjoys exploring the Triangle with his dog, Bubba, while his cat, Sterling, holds down the fort.

Janel R.

Janel has 29 years of experience teaching children in the Early Childhood realm, 23 of those years have been spent teaching children with a variety of exceptionalities. The other 6 years were served in the Archdiocese of New Orleans as a Kindergarten Teacher at St. Matthew the Apostle school in River Ridge. She holds an undergraduate degree from Louisiana Tech University and a master’s degree from the University of New Orleans in Non-Categorical Preschool Handicapped which certifies her in the education of students ages birth through age 6 with a variety of disabilities. In order to help a child reach their potential, she determines the child’s learning style and provides fun, engaging activities to learn new material. She uses a multisensory approach to learning which includes enhanced tactile, auditory and kinesthetic techniques. Having the training and knowledge of recent research regarding the science of reading, she is able to assess pre-reading skills to find what particular skills a child may be having difficulty with and break those down into smaller chunks of success in which to build a strong foundation for learning new skills. Beginning math skills are taught with hands on manipulatives for children to gain concrete representation of concepts being taught. This is then paired with real life word problems to help beginning addition and subtraction skills. When learning to write, her philosophy is that children need to develop the necessary fine motor and visual motor skills as a preliminary means to writing. She uses many alternatives to learning beginning writing strokes to simply putting a pencil in a child’s hand. Using “sing-songy” rhymes, children can recall basic writing strokes to become more proficient with writing letters and numbers as they progress through the stages of writing. She then includes beginning steps to the writing process of formulating thoughts and ideas to lead to written language. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, house plants, crafting, and crocheting.
