Patrick O.

Patrick is a graduate of Trent University with a Bachelor’s Degree of Education, with additional qualifications in Special Education, and Health and Physical Education. He also has a degree from York University in Social Science, and a diploma from Humber College in Media Communications. He originally discovered his passion for teaching while working with at-risk youth in the Ski Hill Blues program.

Gabrielle R.

Gabrielle is a passionate educator who enjoys teaching students of all ages. She holds a Bachelor of Education with minors in Contemporary Arts, Sociology and Curriculum and Instruction (Joint Honours First Class with Distinction), along with a K-12 teaching certification. In addition to academic teaching, Gabrielle has taught dance for many years. She has also trained in dance and performed professionally across Canada, the United States and Europe. While dancing with a ballet company in Geneva, Switzerland, Gabrielle worked in a French-speaking environment for six months. This experience enhanced her French language skills, which she developed as a student at Brown Public School and The Bishop Strachan School. Gabrielle is grateful to be a Prep Academy Tutor!

Michelle B.

Michelle is currently a teacher candidate studying at York University. She will be OCT certified as a junior/intermediate teacher in the Spring of 2023. She graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Journalism, with a minor in English, and a high honours in 2012. Michelle has over a decade of experience working with children ages 4 to 19 in a variety of settings.

One of Michelle’s core tenets as a teacher is that all students are capable of learning. When working with students, she is focused on nurturing each student’s unique gift and using students’ personal interests to assist in their learning. Michelle loves working one-on-one with students to develop personal relationships, understand what makes them special, and build their confidence in their own abilities as learners.

Michelle is passionate about reading, writing, and media literacy. With her journalism background, she is a specialist in clear and effective communication through writing. She is a strong believer in developing student voice and confidence through frequent, low-pressure, creative writing exercises, which help students build toward stronger academic writing. She is experienced in proofreading and eager to help secondary students polish their essays and personal statements.

Sabrina S.

Sabrina is an Ontario Certified Teacher. She grew up in North Bay, Ontario and moved to Toronto to complete her Undergraduate Degree in History at York University. She decided to pursue teaching as a career after taking a course in Athens, Greece where she met some local English teachers. She knew she could make a difference anywhere in the world. Sabrina completed a Bachelor of Education at Lakehead University. Growing up in Northern Ontario, Sabrina loves the outdoors and being in nature. Sabrina enjoys merging Environmental Education with the Ontario curriculums whenever possible because she believes fresh air and staying active contribute to successful learning. Over the last few years, she has developed a love for travel and has gained experience teaching and working with children in the United States and Spain. Every trip Sabrina takes is part of her ongoing learning journey that transfers into her teaching. Sabrina’s passion for History and her curiosity for Math carries through into her teaching as well. Sabrina understands that all students learn in unique ways, and she enjoys discovering how her students learn best. She finds helping students discover their full potential fun and fulfilling.

OLIVIA B-H.

Olivia is currently in her second year of the Bachelor of Education program at Mount Royal University with a double minor in English and Indigenous Studies. So far in her degree Olivia has done fieldwork in Cochrane and is currently at Westmount Charter Elementary in Calgary.

When she is not in school or tutoring, Olivia spends her time teaching children’s dance classes! She has a passion for working with children, and enjoys helping them work to achieve their goals, whatever they may be.

Kate J.

Kate is a certified teacher in British Columbia, Ontario and Australia. She grew up in Toronto, Ontario and completed the Concurrent Education program at Nipissing University. Graduating with a Bachelor of Honors Psychology and a Bachelor of Education. As well, she completed a Postgraduate course in Special Education and is currently finishing her Masters of Education and Technology. It was during her volunteer teaching experience in Costa Rica that she grew a passion for Special Education and encouraging diverse learners.

Kate moved to British Columbia just over a year ago due to her love of nature, travel, and passion for continuing her learning. During the summer months, Kate does online and in-person tutoring and has previously worked running a horseback riding camp for children.

Kate believes that by building a strong relationship with her students and understanding their abilities, she is better able to meet their needs and grow their knowledge. She also places importance on developing the whole learner, incorporating social and life skills and student interests into her teaching. Kate’s favorite subjects to teach are math, art, and social studies. Kate finds education very rewarding, she greatly enjoys working with children and teens and hopes to continue growing her personal experiences and knowledge.

Saje R.

Saje is a Certified Teacher. She graduated from Mount Royal University in the spring of 2022, with a Bachelor of Elementary Education and a minor in Spanish Languages and Hispanic Cultures. She completed her final teaching internship with Calgary Academy, where she taught Grade 2 students. Throughout her field experiences and practicum placements, Saje has experience teaching at every grade level. Saje believes in the importance of decolonizing our classrooms, schools and curriculums and successfully completed her final capstone project titled “Roses of Reconciliation: the Art of un-Learning”. Through collaboration alongside Indigenous communities, authentically and respectfully incorporating Indigenous voices and resources into the classroom, and working with Elders and Knowledge Keepers, Saje strives to model decolonization and teach students their role in reconciliation.

Saje‘Slove for working with youth was fostered at a young age, when she became a camp counselor for 8 consecutive summers. Saje spent her summers working at Camp Cadicasu, where she would instill love, wonder, curiosity and appreciation for nature with youth. She initially began her studies of Education at the University of Saskatchewan, where she studied for one year before transferring to Mount Royal University. After five years of pursuing her dream, Saje made the decision to teach abroad. She worked as a grade one teacher at a private school in Guadalajara, Mexico and fell in love with the culture and school. Additionally, Saje has experience private tutoring at varying ages and subject areas. While tutoring, Saje fosters a safe and inclusive learning environment where the learner feels comfortable taking learning risks and exploring new challenges. Through hands-on, personalized instruction directed at the students interests and learning needs, students’ love for learning expands. Saje believes in supporting students in expanding their self-confidence and self-esteem to support their development in the classroom and beyond.

In Saje‘s free time, you can find her climbing mountains, in a downward dog yoga position, reading books, creating art, or dancing in nature. She loves anything regarding creative expression and believes in the healing power of art and nature. With a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to the curriculum, Saje finds overlaps within subject areas to create integrated learning for her students. Saje is looking forward to tutoring with you!

Mikayla P.

Mikayla grew up and studied in Prince Edward Island, Canada. In 2017, she graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and English. During this degree she took an Introduction to Education course as an elective; this is where her passion for education and teaching was born. She went on to complete a Bachelor of Education degree, specializing in Elementary, Indigenous, and International Education, also with UPEI. As a part of her Bachelor of Education degree she had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand to complete her practicum. This opened her eyes to new teaching methodologies and incorporating cultural awareness in the classroom. It also fostered a deep love of travel and openness to new experiences. Since 2018, Mikayla has taught in classrooms from K-9. She has experience with all subjects in the elementary curriculum, but her passion lies with literacy. This past year, Mikayla worked with students both in school and also after school as a tutor, with students who needed extra support in literacy. It was the favorite part of her day to meet with these students and build their confidence and skills in both reading and writing. Her approach is student centered, focusing on students strengths and interests. Her belief is that learning should be engaging, positive, and approachable. Mikayla loves teaching so much that she is constantly practicing at home teaching her dog, Gunner, lots of new tricks.

CATHERINE A.

Catherine recently graduated from Langara College with a certificate as an Education Assistant. She currently works as a student support worker in a Life Skills class at a local high school. She believes students are capable of learning anything when given the proper attention and the chance to use their strengths. Catherine is positive, passionate, and supportive in everything she does. Her goal is to transfer from being an education assistant to an elementary school teacher. In her free time, she enjoys spending time in nature and reading.

Laura Rose T.

EN: Laura Rose is a first-year student at Concordia University in the Human Relations program. She is a very kind, loving and passionate student. Her perseverance is exceptional and so is her support for her peers. She treats everyone equally and is always there to offer a helping hand. She is very patient and understanding. She will go the extra mile to help a student achieve their potential.
