Thad F.

With a bachelor’s degree from the Air Force Academy and a master’s from theUniversity of Dayton, Thad’s credentials and experience run broad and deep. For over 30 years he has taught math, science, and English at the university level–all the way down through first grade. Thad’s passion and joy is helping students and their families overcome academic challenges and grow to thrive at the highest levels of their potential.

In his free time, Thad enjoys his six children and three grandchildren, tennis, hiking, photography, swing dancing, and food with his wife, Beth. He almost never meets a student with whom he does not enjoy working, and he hopes to continue teaching as long as his health allows–at least 50 more years!

 

Kristin H.

Kristin Haley is a dedicated educator with a passion for empowering students to reach their full potential. Currently pursuing a certification in education, Kristin holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and brings a unique perspective to her teaching approach.

With three years of experience as a long-term substitute teacher in elementary education, Kristin has honed her skills in creating engaging and effective learning experiences. She understands the importance of personalized instruction and strives to tailor her tutoring sessions to meet the individual needs of each student.

Kristin’s journey in education began with her fascination with sociology, where she explored the complexities of human behavior and societal structures. This background enriches her understanding of students’ diverse backgrounds and helps her create inclusive learning environments where every student feels valued and supported.

In her tutoring sessions, Kristin emphasizes building strong foundational skills in reading, writing, and math, while also fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. She believes in empowering students to become confident and independent learners who are equipped to tackle any challenge they encounter.

Outside of tutoring, Kristin enjoys exploring her creative side through cooking and painting. Her enthusiasm for learning and dedication to her students make her a valuable asset in helping students excel academically and reach their goals.

Lauren H.

Lauren is a native New Yorker who spent her life steeped in all the art and culture the city has to offer. She is a born educator, lifelong learner, and giant nerd who is obsessed with music, literature, history, technology, and social justice. Lauren spent her formative years dedicated to writing and visual and performing arts, and still had time to get a perfect score on the SAT. She also worked as the Vocal Director and Science Lab Instructor at a camp for gifted and talented children. While studying studio production and composition at the Conservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase she began tutoring students to prepare them for various standardized tests and subjects. Rather than attend law school, Lauren became a full-time tutor, and has been one for over 15 years. Lauren truly loves what she does, and aims for every student to become confident, intellectually curious, and passionate about learning. She believes education is holistic, enthusiasm infectious, and this is what keeps students engaged and excited to pursue their goals as they become better critical thinkers, readers, and problem solvers who are always pushing the boundaries of what is possible. In addition to tutoring and advising, she also teaches a robotics class in which elementary school children build and program their own Lego robots. Lauren’s passions include eating her way across every continent, collecting records, and curling. She has been playing the game, known as chess on ice, for 6 years, is a certified USA Curling instructor, and is also Co-Director of Education at Brooklyn Lakeside Curling Club.

Shannon L.

Shannon is a passionate, caring, and empowering educator certified to teach all subjects from preschool through sixth grade. She completed her BA in Elementary Education at Florida Atlantic University and continued her education at Barry University to obtain a M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction with a certification in Montessori Education. Shannon has over 15 years experience teaching, tutoring, and creating individualized, interactive, and engaging lessons. With additional certifications in ESOL, Reading, Gifted, Montessori Education, and Mental Health First Aide, Shannon is well qualified to meet the needs of a diverse student population and focus on supporting the whole child. She is also uniquely qualified to help students fine tune their skills with organization, study strategies, and executive functioning. She welcomes a challenge and has yet to meet a child that she was unable to build some sort of connection with. Shannon truly has a gift for mentoring and educating that could reach even the most resistant student. In her free time Shannon enjoys exploring the outdoors and homeschooling her three year old son, reading fiction novels, and traveling.

 

Michael K.

Michael K. is a Certified Teacher. He grew up in NJ and completed an Undergraduate Degree from Northeastern University. He completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Education focusing on Middle School Math. He grew up with a deep love of the city and once he decided to move into the city, he never looked back. Michael always had a passion for working with children which led him to his teaching career. Through teaching, he has been able to help students connect their prior knowledge to new topics in Middle School Math. Michael has extensive experience working with neurodivergent students and a variety of curriculums including Engage NY, Singapore Math, and Math in Focus.

Anna S.

Anna S. earned a BA from CUNY Brooklyn College and an MFA from Columbia University. She is a dedicated, adaptable educator who has been successfully providing academic support to students of various grade levels since 2013. While finishing her novel manuscript at Columbia, Anna served as the first Lead Teaching Fellow for her department and completed the Advanced Track of the Teaching Development Program; these experiences solidified her belief that collaboration is essential to effective pedagogy and that guidance is always best offered through a spirit of mutual exploration. She believes that a balance of structure and flexibility is essential to helping students excel. As a writer, she has a special passion for teaching all things related to the English language. She also loves to create tailor-made strategies for test prep— especially the math sections. When she is not teaching or writing, she enjoys playing the flute and making mosaics.

Samantha T.

A true New Yorker, Samantha started her educational journey at the Nightingale Bamford School in NYC before pursuing a degree in Communications at Syracuse University, where she graduated cum laude. Following graduation, Samantha spent over a decade working in Public Relations, where she honed her communication skills and problem-solving abilities.

Now, she has set her sights on a new path, and is attending Fordham University’s Graduate School of Education, where she is working towards her goal of becoming a School Counselor. Fueled by a strong passion for working with children and helping them unlock their full potential, Samantha takes great pride in her ability to simplify complex concepts into easily digestible formats for kids of all ages. As a tutor, her expertise lies in reading comprehension, writing, and executive function skill building. In her spare time, she enjoys going to museums, taking long walks in Central Park, and exploring all that NYC has to offer.

Sylvia D.

Sylvia D. is a dedicated individual with a passion for tutoring students of all ages and abilities, aiming to help them reach their maximum psychosocial and academic potential. While serving as a full-time certified teacher in Chicago, Illinois, Sylvia taught all levels of mathematics. Leveraging her clinical background in Psychology, she implemented strategies to enhance self-esteem and foster confidence among her students.

As a trained behavioral specialist, Sylvia has valuable experience working with students with special needs. Beyond her commitment to education, she is also an avid animal lover, using her knowledge to care for them. Sylvia looks forward to the opportunity to serve and make a positive impact on the academic and emotional growth of those she works with.

Kerline L.

Kerline L. is a dedicated and certified Pre-K through 3rd-grade teacher with a genuine passion for education. Kerline graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Administration at Barry University in Miami, Florida. Her journey in education began long before her formal teaching career. For two decades, Kerline served as a Sunday school teacher in her church, nurturing the hearts and minds of children. It was during this time that she discovered her love for teaching and the profound impact it could have on young lives. Driven by her desire to make a positive difference in the lives of children, Kerline transitioned to a formal teaching role.

Kerline’s educational experience includes three years as a classroom teacher and one year as an ESL teacher teaching English as a Second Language online to students in China. Kerline firmly believes in the uniqueness of every child, understanding that each one learns in their own way. Her teaching philosophy revolves around creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every student can thrive. Whether in person or online Kerline makes learning very engaging so students will enjoy the experience. Kerline believes students are able to grasp the concepts better when learning is fun and engaging. With her love for books, Kerline is on a mission to ignite the same passion for reading in her students, believing that literacy is not just a skill but a gateway to endless possibilities.

Family holds a special place in Kerline’s heart, and she cherishes the moments spent with her three beautiful children. As a mother and an educator, she understands the significance of fostering a strong support system for children both at home and in the classroom.

 

 

Gissela V.

Born in Ecuador and raised in Chicago, Gissela began her education career at the age of eighteen tutoring middle school math and reading. Deciding to pursue education further, she traveled to her home country where she worked as an ESL Teacher for three years. It was during this trip that she fell in love with teaching and returned to Chicago to graduate with a Bachelor’s in English Literature and Secondary/Middle Ed. with an ELL endorsement. Eight years of classroom experience has taught Gissela that relationship building, goal setting and collaborative learning are essential for a students’ growth. Gissela considers herself a lifelong learner, which is why she is not only continuing a postgraduate degree but she loves to attend local classes to learn new skills such as sewing or health and body mobility. Being an avid reader and a lover of hot cocoa and winter weather – she enjoys reading poetry, manga and biographies of people who inspire her. She loves to host Book Clubs with her friends and travel with her husband – anywhere as long as it has mountains and a body of water!
