Zachary M.

Zachary M. is presently in his last year of his study for his dual masters in math and physics at UTSA. Some may say that in doing so, he is trying to prolong his adolescence and avoid adulthood. But truth be told, Zach is very passionate about his studies. This was not always the case. Admittedly, Zach was mathematically challenged in middle school (his mom would help him with his algebra homework). But something clicked for him in high school. He took every AP math and science class that he could and went so far as to participate in academic UIL. After graduation from high school, Zach began studying math and physics at UTSA. He took up a job as a physics tutor on a whim but came to discover that he really enjoys helping people learn. Now as a graduate student, Zach teaches introductory physics labs. In doing so, he does his best to accommodate all of his students while simultaneously emphasizing the mathematical and theoretical underpinnings of physics.

She graduated from the University of New Orleans with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Math Education. Kristine spent most of the 30 years in Jefferson Parish Public School System high schools teaching everything from remedial through honors math classes and taught 5th grade for 3 years. She loves one-on-one work, as it allows the time for her to verify the student’s strengths and weaknesses to focus on areas where improvement is needed. She uses topics that interest each student for a more personal and engaging learning experience. As a tutor, Kristine is very dedicated to using methods that each student can learn from. She also believes in frequent communication with parents as part of the learning team. She believes that laughter is an essential part of learning and considers all questions to be important.

Michael S.

After working with hundreds of students, Michael understands that struggles with math and science are incredibly common—and that students are not alone. Often, classroom teachers don’t have the time to adapt to every student’s unique learning style. That’s where Michael steps in: he works closely with each student to find the approach that makes the most sense for them. His past students have gone from being frustrated by a single problem all day to breezing through it with just a small shift in perspective.

Michael’s teaching experience spans a wide range of settings, from one-on-one tutoring in high school to leading review sessions for hundreds of college students. He was even selected as the pedagogy fellow in his graduate program, responsible for preparing incoming graduate students to teach—an honor that reflects both deep content knowledge and outstanding instructional skill. This high-level perspective on effective teaching methods enables Michael to bring exceptional flexibility and responsiveness to his tutoring sessions.

In terms of subject expertise, Michael brings thousands of hours of experience, including 11 years of tutoring, 7 years as a teaching assistant, 2 years of instructing college courses, and both a PhD and a BS in Physics, along with an undergraduate minor in Mathematics. With this foundation, he is confident in his ability to work through any course material alongside his students.

Michael’s tutoring journey began in high school, when he noticed that many of his peers didn’t know where to turn for academic support. This inspired him to explore Universal Design for Learning—an approach that emphasizes presenting content in multiple formats to meet different learning styles. Since then, he has supported college students in tutoring centers, led supplementary instruction sessions, and taught lecture and lab courses at the university level. Michael creates a learning environment where students feel safe to ask questions, engage deeply in discussions, and leave sessions empowered to apply their learning in the real world. He brings this wealth of experience to every tutoring session to help students get exactly what they need from their education.
