LeKesha R.

LeKesha is a dedicated and passionate educator with over eighteen years of experience working with youth. A native of Houma, Louisiana, she graduated in the top 20% of her class from Ellender Memorial High School. Driven by a love for history and civic engagement, she pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of New Orleans, earning a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in Political Science in 2002. LeKesha’s journey into education was not a traditional one. After facing life-changing personal experiences, including the tragic loss of her brother, she found a deeper calling in working with young people. In 2008, she began substitute teaching at the high school level. Her natural connection with students quickly led her to a full- time teaching role, where she discovered a profound passion for education and mentorship. Over the years, LeKesha has worn many hat —teacher, cheerleading sponsor, student council advisor, girls’ flag football coach, after-school mentor, and tutor. She believes that building strong, trusting relationships with students is the key to unlocking their full potential. Her holistic approach to education focuses on meeting students where they are and guiding them to where they can go. In addition to her classroom work, LeKesha holds a Master’s degree in Education with a specialization in Curriculum and Instruction from Walden University. Her teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every day is a gift: “Do what you love today because tomorrow is not promised.” LeKesha continues to be a powerful advocate for youth, inspiring her students not only to learn but to lead, grow, and thrive.

MATTHEW H.

Matthew Houk is a 28 year old substitute teacher in Saskatoon, SK. They graduated from the College of Education at the University of Saskatchewan with honours and have a wide range of experiences in elementary classrooms (K-8) both in the city and in rural areas such as Hutterite Colonies. Matthew’s strengths as an educator are finding connections with students, connecting students interests/needs to learning, and using real-world scenarios to help students understand what they are learning. They feel that if learning has connections to reality it makes it easier for learners to understand it. The Social Sciences are their primary teaching areas followed by Fine Arts; but Matthew is able to pick up and teach just about anything if needed. When not teaching they enjoy painting, reading, playing tabletop games with friends, and camping.

I am in secondary education, majoring in social studies and health as a minor. However, I would love to teach psychology as a class. I now work as an EA for Regina Public and Prairie Valley, and I genuinely love doing my job every single day!

Vania G.

Vania Gulston has more than 20 years of experience in the field of education. She holds Pennsylvania certifications in secondary mathematics and social studies; and has masters degrees in education, history and folklore, performance studies, and technology design from the University of California at Berkeley, Temple University, and New York University, respectively.

Her teaching practice has been shaped by her love of radio. She became a social studies teacher in order to extend the work of helping to broaden people’s understanding of their social world that she did as a community radio broadcaster. She pursued a degree in technology design because she wanted to equip herself with the technical skills necessary to operate the broadcast equipment of a radio station. As well, she pursued graduate studies in tech design because, after experiencing obstacles in her efforts to increase her technical knowledge, she wanted to be able to offer that same technical knowledge to women and people of color who sought it.

She is the founder of WJYN Radio–a low power fm radio station in Philadelphia
