Roxanne H.

Roxanne is a licensed teacher with a bachelor’s degree in English, and a master’s degree in K-12 Reading and Writing.

Working with Roxanne, your child will crack the reading code, understand complex texts, and become an expert in writing structures. Best of all, they will love what they’re learning, and love THEMSELVES for it.

Roxanne’s reading curriculum integrates evidence-based components of dyslexia instruction with a practice that follows the standard Orton-Gillingham scope and sequence.

Tutoring includes skill-specific coaching, progress monitoring, homework support, and communication with the student’s classroom teacher.

Also, Roxanne has been honoring all forms of neurodiversity for fifteen years.

STEPHANIE F.

Stephanie brings a wealth of expertise and dedication to her role as an educator, with extensive experience working one-on-one with children who face a wide range of learning challenges. Her background includes specialized training in remedial reading programs such as The Wilson Program, Direct Instruction, and UFLI, equipping her with proven strategies to support students in developing essential literacy skills.

Stephanie holds a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in English from Simon Fraser University and is a qualified EAL (English as an Additional Language) instructor. Her teaching focus spans middle and high school students in Humanities and English composition, as well as Primary and Junior students in literacy and remedial reading support.

In addition to her work locally, Stephanie has also supported numerous students internationally, helping them acquire and refine their English language skills. Her ability to tailor instruction to the unique needs of each learner ensures that every student feels supported and empowered in their academic journey. Stephanie’s passion for education and her dedication to fostering growth make her an invaluable resource for her students and their families.

SHELLEY F.

Shelley has a Bachelor’s degree in Education with a minor in Special Education. She taught full- time in both the public and private school systems until June of 2020.
Shelley’s teaching and previous tutoring assignments have spanned Grades 1-8 and include many years of teaching combined grades with supported integration of students with mild to severe needs.

The highlight of her teaching career spanned a period of several years where she was trained in the International Baccalaureate methodology whose focus was to teach children to develop critical thinking skills within the current subject matter.

The area of study was formulated by the teaching team as a question and then explored in depth largely through the 6 strands of language arts and fine arts in order that all children were able to demonstrate their learning in their preferred modality. Final projects would be carefully and thoughtfully written, designed and built.

Subsequently, other classrooms of children would be invited to come and celebrate the learning that had occurred thereby enhancing and reinforcing not only the quality of learning but the very important idea that learning is meant to be shared. The learners would self-evaluate as part of the overall measure of learning.

Shelley also gained training and experience in an RBC sponsored young entrepreneurs program that encouraged children to develop an understanding of the workings of the business world. From choosing a charity to which funds would be donated to determining products and services to be designed, built and sold, the children came to know that each child had a role/ strength that could be utilized to promote success in business.

MATTHEW G.

Matthew graduated from the University of Alberta’s Campus St Jean with a major in Social Studies and a minor in French Language Arts. He has taught French Immersion in Edmonton and Calgary for over 5 years, and has served as a tutor for over 10 years.

Today, Matthew is a law student at the University of Calgary. He remains highly passionate in working with students and helping them achieve their goals!

HEATHER M.

Heather has a Master’s of Teaching degree and is qualified to teach in Alberta and Ontario. She has over ten years of experience developing and educating youth through academics and play. She is patient, efficient, and always works to ensure students are understanding the material. She believes that it is important to foster a love of learning and looks forward to helping students grow as learners.

PETE H.

Peter is entering his 21st in teaching. He has earned a B.Sc., B.Ed., and an M.A. (teaching). Peter won the Clarence Samson gold medal in education, graduating first in his class (2002) from the University of Calgary. In 2018, Peter’s class of grade 6 learners achieved the highest PAT results in Rocky View School Division. He has taught multiple grades but has primary focused on grades 3-6. Peter was also a senior lecturer at Roehampton University in the teacher training college (mathematics department). While teaching in London, England for nearly 14 years, he had the opportunity to lead several schools, as an assistant principal, vice principal, principal and executive principal. But he says that his first love is teaching. He particularly enjoys helping students learn to read and read better. He loves writing across all genres and of course, he loves doing and teaching mathematics. His hope is to help the students he teaches get well prepared for their next stage of learning, where they can make a positive contribution and thrive, as confident learners.

MICAH P.

Micah has a combined Bachelor’s in Education and Spanish/French. She teaches in the Spanish Bilingual Program for the Calgary Board of Education. She currently teaches in an Elementary School but has experience in Junior High as well. Micah was a tutor for Spanish University courses and enjoys helping everyone reach their full academic potential.

Raemyn C.

Raemyn graduated the Concurrent Education Program at York University and specializes in the intermediate/senior division for English and Social Sciences. Her dedication and passion for education helps her create an engaging learning environment for students of various learning styles. She is a great organizational coach and can help your child in becoming more organized and feel more confident in accomplishing their work in a timely manner. Raemyn has experience working one-on-one with students. She has worked in the PAWS Program at York University where she helped at-risk university athletes enhance their organizational skills and keep their grades up to ensure their success in both school, and their chosen sports. Raemyn also has experience working in a high school alongside a mentor teacher to gain first-hand experience within a classroom setting. In her free time Raemyn enjoys watching hockey, spending time with friends and family, and travelling.

MARISSA B.

Marissa joined Prep Academy Tutors in 2014 after completing her Bachelor’s of Education (Primary/Junior) with a program focus in Special Education at Queen’s University. Since then, Marissa has taken additional qualifications in Special Education (part 1 and 2), Communication Needs: Autism, Reading, Kindergarten, and Primary/Junior Mathematics. In 2015, Marissa participated in a conference in Oregon to learn how to train teachers in Direct Instruction. In addition to Direct Instruction, Marissa also has trained teachers in the Wilson Reading System.

Marissa is passionate about making learning come alive for her students.  She works hard to find new and creative ways to reach every learner.  As an educator, it is her mission to inspire her students to become life-long learners who strive to ask questions and find answers.  Developing confidence and making learning fun are top priorities during Marissa’s tutoring sessions.  Students learn that it is through challenging themselves that they can learn and grow (even if they make mistakes along the way).  Marissa firmly believes that all students are unique and deserve to be educated in a way that incorporates their strengths and interests into their learning process.  

When Marissa isn’t teaching, you can find her hanging out with her puppy Rufus, or riding her horse, Rex.
