KATHLEEN R.
Courtney M.
Courtney is an Ontario Certified Teacher, holding a Bachelor of Education and a BA in English and History, both from Queen’s University. Courtney is qualified to teach English and History at the Intermediate and Senior grade levels. She also has experience teaching Primary and Junior grade levels in her teachable subjects, as well as in mathematics.
Courtney has had a variety of classroom experiences during her time in the Queen’s University’s Concurrent Education program. In addition to her traditional English and History placements, Courtney has experience in at-risk programs, ESL classrooms, and in the Ontario Literacy Course. These experiences have led Courtney to develop a teaching philosophy based around inclusive and differentiated learning. Additionally, Courtney is an advocate for positive learning spaces and for teaching critical thinking skills in order to facilitate strong communities of learners in today’s schools.
Courtney is very passionate about learning opportunities outside the classroom. She has over five years of experience in Elementary Outdoor Education, Intermediate/Senior Leadership Programs, and Outdoor Co-Operative Learning programs. She believes that learning that takes place outside the classroom can further any student’s understanding of material, and, more importantly, teaches students to work together and support one another.
When Courtney isn’t working in educational programs, she could be found rock climbing, attending Broadway (or Mirvish) shows, or reading the latest book she bought.
Irene T.
Irene is an Ontario Certified Teacher at the Intermediate/Senior level and has taught in the Toronto District School Board for over ten years. She graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Science and went on to complete her Bachelor of Education at the University of Ottawa. Irene is qualified to teach grade 9/10 Science, grade 11/12 Chemistry and grade 11 Biology. She also has experience teaching grades 1-10 Mathematics as well. Outside of teaching, Irene enjoys more active and creative ventures including: Zumba, table tennis, piano, scrapbooking, baking/cake decorating and is currently learning how to salsa and crochet!
Kasia K.
Kasia has a long-standing commitment and avid interest in supporting individuals’ learning through practical, research-based, and enjoyable activities. She received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology (with a Minor in Philosophy) from the University of Toronto, and her Master of Arts in Child Study and Education from the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education (OISE). She is an Ontario Certified Teacher with qualifications in Special Education. Kasia has been a Researcher and Consultant for the OISE affiliated Balanced Literacy Diet, as well as a lesson creator for JUMP Math, and understands best practices in both literacy and mathematics. Kasia is also currently the Director of a literacy program that provides Professional Development to primary teachers, which focuses on fostering literacy by supporting oral language. She is a resourceful, conscientious, and reliable tutor, with a wealth of experience ranging from helping adults pass professional standardized tests to children facing serious learning challenges. In her one-on-one sessions, she aims to find the most effective strategies that nourish the skills that need the most attention. She offers a balanced approach that integrates skill development and critical thinking, so that students feel confident in their particular tasks as well as equipped for future challenges.
HARRIS L.
Harris is an OCT certified teacher working towards a career in data science. Born and raised in Honduras, Harris has a Masters degree in Physics and a Bachelors degree in Mathematics. Harris has two years experience teaching high school in Toronto and a total of 12 years of combined tutoring experience dating back to his Undergraduate years. During Graduate school, Harris taught physics labs to pre-med students and gave lectures in physics to first year physics classes. His experience spans from tutoring math (grades 9-12 and first year university) and physics (grades 11-12, IB and first year university), tutoring grade 10 science, grade 11 computer science, grade 12 data management, and grade 12 calculus from the TDSB curriculum. Given his data science pursuit, he can also be of assistance with beginner’s Python programming language as well. Most computer science courses in high school are moving towards teaching object-oriented programming. Harris is a huge fan of comedy and sports so he uses both of those aspects to connect with students.
Deanna H.
Deanna is an Ontario College of Teachers certified biology and history teacher at the intermediate and senior levels. In the near future, she hopes to gain additional qualifications in math and social science instruction, as well. In addition to holding a Master of Teaching (MT) degree from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, Deanna has also obtained an MSc in biology and an Honours BA in humanities from York University. For her academic achievements in these areas, she has earned several scholarships and awards, including the Ontario Graduate Scholarship, which she was the recipient of for two successive years.
Though she is an accomplished academic, teaching is Deanna’s true calling. Altogether, she has over 6 years of experience working and volunteering in education-related contexts with students of all ages and academic levels. In particular, she has obtained extensive volunteer experience with the national charitable organization, Let’s Talk Science, as well as York University’s Bethune College Junior Fellow Program, and U of T’s Global Ideas Institute. In addition to working as a teaching assistant for several undergraduate science courses at York University, Deanna has also acted as a course instructor for a variety of educational summer programs, including York University’s Helix Summer Science Institute and the University of Toronto Schools’ Bright Lights in the Lab summer camp. Deanna has obtained important experience teaching science, biology, and history in a number of Toronto Schools, as well, including North Toronto, Harbord, Riverdale, and W eston Collegiate Institutes.
When she is not busy teaching, Deanna enjoys playing video games, discussing politics, gardening, and hanging out with her cat, Thomas.
Vanessa A.
I graduated from Brock University in 2011 with an undergraduate degree in Psychology, after many years working with children as young as 3 months up to 14 years old, I returned to school for my Bachelor of Education at Brock university for my primary/junior certification. After graduating, I spent 2 years teaching internationally in London, England. Some of my previous experiences include working as a swim instructor for the City of Toronto, volunteering in both TCDSB and TDSB across many grades, working as an Educational Assistant for a TCDSB summer school program for students with special needs, and volunteering at a specialized preschool program for children with multiple exceptionalities and difficulties. While in school and having returned to Canada, I worked in Early childhood programs to support the development of children through learning and play. When I am not teaching and tutoring, I enjoy travelling, playing hockey/volleyball and spending time with my friends and family.
I am an Occasional Teacher with the TDSB and have furthered my professional development by completing Additional Qualifications in Special Education Part 1 and Primary/Junior Math Part 1. I am passionate about helping students meet their goals, I provide academic support and encouragement to make them feel capable and confident in their ability to succeed.
Shivani A.
Shivani currently works full time as a grade 6 French immersion teacher with the Peel District School Board. She received her Masters of teaching from OISE and is a qualified teacher registered with OCT. She completed her Honours Bachelor of Arts at the University of Toronto where she majored in French Language Learning and minored in Sociology and Theatre. Shivani has experience working with students of different ages in classroom situations and one-on-one. She has also had the opportunity to work as an English Language Assistant in France where she taught intermediate grade level students in a variety of teaching settings. Shivani is currently a Childhood Educator at the University of Toronto where she plans and implements lessons and extracurricular activities for children between the ages of 5 to 15. Outside of teaching, Shivani enjoys travelling, reading, dancing and baking.
Brenelle D.
Brenelle is currently studying in the Masters of Teaching program at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education in Toronto. She graduated from the Extended French Program in Secondary School and earned an Honours BSc with distinction from McMaster University, majoring in Biology and minoring in Psychology. She is qualified to teach Junior and Intermediate divisions (Grades 4-10) for all subjects. Additionally, she has the requisites to teach senior level (Grades 11-12) Core French, Biology, and Chemistry. Brenelle has a substantial amount of experience working with children aged 4-18 in both work and volunteer settings, including being a camp counselor, specialty sports instructor, camp teacher and youth coordinator. Brenelle endeavors to tailor lesson plans toward the strengths and varying needs of each individual. She utilizes current and relevant techniques to engage students in the subject matter resulting in the achievement of learning objectives and overall enjoyment in the subject. Outside of tutoring, Brenelle has played competitive soccer and basketball for over a decade, enjoys trying new recipes and is an avid movie watcher.
Rumana T.
Rumana graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology. She has earned a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University in the Intermediate/Senior division, qualified to teach Biology and Chemistry. In addition, she is certified by the Ontario College of Teachers. She has previous work experience as a private one-on-one tutor as well as working in group settings at tutoring centers. Rumana enjoys creating an environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions. She is able to tutor Grade 9-10 Science, Grade 11 Chemistry and Biology, and Grade 9-12 Mathematics. Additionally, Rumana is an SAT Coach and she enjoys guiding students in successful strategies to succeed on this test. She enjoys outdoor activities, traveling, watching sports, and gardening.
