Maria S.

Maria is an experienced educator, curriculum developer, and academic tutor who specializes in helping students strengthen their reading, writing, communication, and overall learning skills. With experience teaching at both the elementary and middle school levels, Maria combines strong classroom expertise with an individualized approach designed to help students become more confident, capable, and independent learners.

Maria earned her degree in Education from California Lutheran University and holds both teaching and ESL certifications. She has spent years working directly with students in the classroom, including several years as a middle school teacher and more recently as a fifth-grade bilingual teacher in North East ISD. She also brings approximately seven years of tutoring experience, giving her extensive practice adapting instruction to the needs of individual learners.

One of Maria’s greatest strengths is her expertise in reading, writing, vocabulary development, and academic language. She helps students develop stronger reading comprehension strategies, organize and communicate ideas more effectively in writing, expand vocabulary, and gain the language skills necessary to understand increasingly complex academic material. Rather than simply helping students complete an assignment, Maria focuses on teaching strategies they can continue using independently.

Her instructional approach is structured, supportive, and highly personalized. Maria establishes clear and achievable learning goals, explicitly models new skills, provides guided practice, and gradually encourages students to work more independently as their confidence grows. She incorporates tools such as sentence frames, thinking routines, modeled responses, vocabulary strategies, and ongoing progress monitoring to make challenging material more accessible and help students recognize their own growth.

Maria has a strong record of student achievement. During the 2023–2024 school year, her classroom achieved the highest STAAR passing rate on her campus, reflecting her ability to combine purposeful planning, high expectations, differentiated instruction, and targeted academic support.

Her experience also extends into curriculum development and instructional design. Maria currently works as a curriculum developer, creating lesson plans, learning activities, assessments, and multimedia instructional resources while also training educators in effectively implementing curriculum materials. This expertise gives her a particularly strong ability to diagnose learning needs, break larger academic goals into manageable steps, and design tutoring sessions around an individual student’s strengths and areas for growth.

Maria provides support across a broad range of subjects, including English, English Language Arts, writing, elementary academics, Algebra, social studies, U.S. History, Spanish, and ESL. She also works with students preparing for the ACT, TEAS, and other academic assessments, helping them strengthen both content knowledge and effective test-taking strategies.

As a bilingual educator who is biliterate in English and Spanish, Maria also tutors conversational, middle school, and high school Spanish. Her understanding of language acquisition benefits students beyond language instruction itself. She understands how vocabulary, sentence structure, comprehension, and communication interact across academic subjects and uses that knowledge to help both monolingual and multilingual students become stronger learners.

Maria has experience differentiating instruction for students representing a wide range of academic abilities and learning needs, including students with learning disabilities. She believes successful tutoring begins by understanding how an individual student learns best and then providing the right combination of structure, encouragement, challenge, and support.

Danicka C.

Danicka has a Master’s degree in Child Study and Education from the University of Toronto. She majored in French Studies with a minor in Sociology from York University’s Glendon Campus. Danicka has taught in international school settings across Canada, England, Portugal, and France, and brings over 5 years of teaching experience. She is familiar with the IB curriculum, UK National Curriculum, French National Curriculum, and the Ontario Curriculum. She has a specialization in teaching French as a Second Language and enjoys working with learners of all abilities and backgrounds. She is also fluent in four languages; English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Aside from teaching, Danicka enjoys travelling, fitness classes, photography, and web design.

Kyle H.

Kyle is a primary English educator and aspiring film professor with more than six years of teaching and tutoring experience across multiple classrooms, workshops, online platforms, and subjects. While he has been pursuing his masters degree in education at National Louis University, he has also been supporting grades 9–12 as a permanent substitute teacher at Hinsdale South High School. Kyle also has led screenwriting, creative writing, and public speaking sessions for Cardinal Filmworks, a student owned and ran film collective at Ball State University (his alma mater). Finally, after his undergrad, he also tutored poetry, Spanish, photography, and videography for learners of all ages with Varsity Tutors as one of their Creative Writing Experts. His style tends to center on building up confidence and problem solving skills through lessons that connect his students’ work to their interests. Creativity is a core tenet of his and because of that he loves to design personalized, engaging sessions that balance creative freedom with structured feedback so that each student grows as both thinker and creator. Because of this more creativity-focused approach, crafting relationships with my students is paramount to me. Learning about their lives and helping them succeed is just as important to me as their academics. Kyle is a lifelong reader, film buff, devoted sci‑fi and fantasy fan, bass guitar player, and avid Chicago & New York sports fan (Cubs/Sox Mets/Jets).

James H.

Upon graduating from college, James began teaching at the St. Ann’s School in Brooklyn, and has taught in the humanities for over 20 years. While he has taught middle schoolers and adults in a variety of settings, Mr. Hamilton has mostly worked in private secondary schools, offering classes in World History, U.S. History, and other subjects. He earned his B.A. at Harvard College in European History, and later, two Masters Degrees (Arts, Philosophy) in Medieval European History with a minor in Renaissance Humanism from Columbia University. In the course of his historical studies, Mr. Hamilton also studied Art History and European languages including German, French, Spanish, and Latin.
Mr. Hamilton remains an enthusiastic student and teacher of history, a challenging, beautiful, and constantly evolving discipline which embraces every aspect of human endeavor.
In his spare time, Mr. Hamilton cooks, reads novels, plays chess, and folds paper, with particular admiration for the beautiful origami models of Hideo Komatsu.

Gilbert H.

Gilbert is an experienced mathematics educator, military leader, and data analyst with a unique ability to help students build both academic skills and confidence. He brings over nine years of classroom teaching experience, combined with more than a decade of leadership as a United States Marine Corps artillery officer.

Gilbert taught high school mathematics for nearly a decade, working with over 1,800 students across subjects including Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Quantitative Reasoning, Financial Math, and Precalculus. He is certified in Mathematics (Grades 7–12) and Computer Science and has a strong track record of improving student performance, including increasing class averages and engagement through structured, strategy-based instruction.

In addition to his teaching experience, Gilbert currently serves as a data analyst for the United States Air Force, where he applies advanced problem-solving, data analysis, and systems thinking—skills he brings directly into his tutoring approach. His background allows him to connect math concepts to real-world applications, helping students understand not just how to solve problems, but why the methods work.

Gilbert is passionate about helping students overcome challenges and develop a growth mindset. Drawing from his military leadership experience, he understands that every student learns differently and tailors his instruction to each individual’s strengths, personality, and learning style. He focuses on simplifying complex problems, building effective strategies, and developing the confidence students need to succeed both academically and personally.

BIANCA D.

Bianca D. is a certified Spanish teacher in New York State and has been teaching Spanish in middle and high school for eleven years. Bianca has also served as the Associate Director of the Iona College Summer Cultural Exchange Program.

Bianca holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Manhattanville College in Spanish and a Master’s Degree in Adolescent Education also from Manhattanville. She maintained the highest of standards while a student at Manhattanville College. Among her many achievements were that she was on the Dean’s List and spent the summer after her junior year abroad in Spain.

Bianca credits her grandmother who was also a Spanish teacher and who grew up in Puerto Rico with being her inspiration for becoming a Spanish teacher and tutor. In her free time, Bianca enjoys volunteering, traveling, baking, and spending time with her family and maltipoo puppy.

Pablo G.

Pablo is a native Spanish teacher. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Translation and Interpreting and a Master’s Degree in Teacher Training, making him the ideal choice for learning French and Spanish. Pablo is curious by nature, attentive, and quite adept at connecting with younger people. He recently arrived from France, where he spent two years of his life perfecting his French and working as a Spanish language assistant at a high school. In his free time, he loves spending hours reading novels, watching romantic films and preparing for his next half marathon.

James H.

James H. studied history as an undergraduate and graduate student, earning BA (Harvard College), MA, and MPhil degrees (Columbia University GSAS), with a focus on Medieval and Modern European History. Since then he has taught both World History and U.S. History, primarily in private secondary schools. He has also taught English as a Second Language, working with adult and younger students from a variety of different nationalities and backgrounds. Mr. Hamilton continues to be an avid reader of history, admiring and enjoying the works of Herodotus, Thucydides, Jacob Burckhardt, Simon Schama, Jill Lepore, and many other brilliant historians.

Diana A. is a passionate English and Spanish educator with over 17 years of experience helping students develop their academic writing, reading comprehension, and communication skills. She holds a Master’s in TESOL, Literacy, and Culture from the University of San Diego and has taught across both high school and college settings. Diana empowers students to become confident, independent writers through engaging, student-centered lessons that make complex ideas accessible. Her approach combines structured skill-building with creativity—whether she’s guiding students through persuasive essays, college application writing, or literary analysis. Beyond academics, Diana fosters a supportive environment where learners build confidence in expressing their own voices. When she’s not teaching, she enjoys discovering new authors and designing lessons that connect language learning to real-world experiences.
