Michael S.

After working with hundreds of students, Michael understands that struggles with math and science are incredibly common—and that students are not alone. Often, classroom teachers don’t have the time to adapt to every student’s unique learning style. That’s where Michael steps in: he works closely with each student to find the approach that makes the most sense for them. His past students have gone from being frustrated by a single problem all day to breezing through it with just a small shift in perspective.

Michael’s teaching experience spans a wide range of settings, from one-on-one tutoring in high school to leading review sessions for hundreds of college students. He was even selected as the pedagogy fellow in his graduate program, responsible for preparing incoming graduate students to teach—an honor that reflects both deep content knowledge and outstanding instructional skill. This high-level perspective on effective teaching methods enables Michael to bring exceptional flexibility and responsiveness to his tutoring sessions.

In terms of subject expertise, Michael brings thousands of hours of experience, including 11 years of tutoring, 7 years as a teaching assistant, 2 years of instructing college courses, and both a PhD and a BS in Physics, along with an undergraduate minor in Mathematics. With this foundation, he is confident in his ability to work through any course material alongside his students.

Michael’s tutoring journey began in high school, when he noticed that many of his peers didn’t know where to turn for academic support. This inspired him to explore Universal Design for Learning—an approach that emphasizes presenting content in multiple formats to meet different learning styles. Since then, he has supported college students in tutoring centers, led supplementary instruction sessions, and taught lecture and lab courses at the university level. Michael creates a learning environment where students feel safe to ask questions, engage deeply in discussions, and leave sessions empowered to apply their learning in the real world. He brings this wealth of experience to every tutoring session to help students get exactly what they need from their education.

“Prep Academy Tutors of San Antonio, Texas has been wonderful at helping me find a tutor for my daughter. They listened to what I had to say when I was asked to describe what my daughter needs. Once we started services, my daughter noticed that her understanding of the subject was better and in return her grades improved as well. I highly recommend the tutoring services from Prep Academy.”

Maggie is known for her kind and patient humour and her compelling confidence in children. For example, her primary school language learning in Irish Gaelic and high school exchange in France, where she completed the Baccalauréat de langue et litterature francaises, planted seeds for her later interest in ethnomathematics and culturally responsive teaching. In 2003 Maggie graduated with a BA in Fine Art History from the University of Toronto, and went on to teach yoga and mindfulness in newcomer, youth and justice-adjacent facilities. Twenty years later she completed an Honours BA in Political Science and Indigenous Studies also at U of T, where she became a learner of a local Ojibwe language (Anishinaabemowin). This June 2025, she will receive an MA in Child Study and Education from the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development, OISE, U of T. During this degree, Maggie’s studies focused on themes of student equity, motivation and peer-based learning and she further developed her knowledge of play and arts integration. Additional defining characteristics include her unreasonable enthusiasm for diving into icy cold water, and her favourite sock colour being tie-dye-rainbow. Madison has multiple years of experience tutoring and working in private schools. In those years she managed to refine her approach on how to work with a vast array of students.
Growing up Madison had insatiable love for literature, writing, and reading. However, her passions didn’t stop there. Madison decided to lean into forensics and criminology which required a different mindset than creative writing. In her time in university, she became experienced in scholarly and technical writing. Therefore, she is able to help students build case studies and research papers to help the student become more familiar and comfortable with both MLA and APA style writing. Madison also has extensive grasp of psychology including topics about memory and social psychology.
Madison’s teaching style involves turning challenges into opportunities. She is passionate about using the student’s own interests to solve problems. Madison also allows the student to explain the topic back to her in order to find blind shots in their knowledge surrounding the topic. In addition, she does more than work on the student’s subject material. The student will also work on time management, developing healthy study habits, and building self-motivation. These are valuable tools they can use as move through the grade levels and beyond.
Madison was born in Nampa, Idaho. In her free time, she enjoys taking care of her two dogs, gaming, baking, and yoga. She is looking forward to working with your child and watching them blossom as their knowledge increases.
