The College Application Essay Is Your Child’s Chance to Stand Out

Grades, test scores, and extracurriculars can look identical across thousands of applicants. The college essay is often the only place where your child gets to speak directly to an admissions committee as an individual — and it’s the one part of the application they have complete control over.

At Prep Academy Tutors, our college essay coaches don’t write the essay for your student. They do something more valuable: they help your child find the story worth telling, and then guide them through the craft of telling it well.

What Our College Essay Coaching Covers

We support students through every component of the college application essay process, including:

The Common App Personal Statement The personal statement is 650 words that travel to every school on your child’s list. It needs to be specific, authentic, and memorable — qualities that are genuinely difficult to achieve without an experienced reader in your corner. Our coaches work with students to identify the right topic, develop their voice, structure the narrative, and refine it through multiple rounds of feedback until it’s the strongest possible version of their story.

College-Specific Supplement Essays Most competitive colleges require supplement essays in addition to the personal statement — some schools require five or more. These range from short “Why This College?” responses to longer essays about intellectual interests, community contributions, and personal identity. Our coaches help students approach each supplement strategically, tailoring the response to what each school is genuinely looking for rather than submitting generic answers across the board.

The Activities Essay and Additional Information Sections The Common App includes shorter writing components that many students overlook — the activities descriptions, the additional information section, and the disciplinary or gap year explanations if applicable. Our coaches help students use every available word count to their advantage.

Editing, Revision, and Deadline Management College essay coaching is an iterative process. Our coaches provide structured, honest feedback at every draft — not just line edits, but substantive guidance on narrative arc, tone, and whether the essay is actually doing the job it needs to do. We also help students manage deadlines across Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision timelines so nothing falls through the cracks.

When to Start

The earlier, the better. Students who begin college essay coaching in the summer before senior year have the most time to explore ideas, write multiple drafts, and revise without deadline pressure. That said, we work with students at every stage — including those who come to us with Early Decision deadlines weeks away. If your child is already in the thick of application season, we can help.

For juniors, starting early means more time for the personal statement and the freedom to take creative risks that produce the most compelling essays.
