The College Application Essay Is Your Child’s Chance to Stand Out
Grades, test scores, and extracurriculars can look identical across thousands of applicants. The college essay is often the only place where your child gets to speak directly to an admissions committee as an individual — and it’s the one part of the application they have complete control over.
At Prep Academy Tutors, our college essay coaches don’t write the essay for your student. They do something more valuable: they help your child find the story worth telling, and then guide them through the craft of telling it well.
What Our College Essay Coaching Covers
We support students through every component of the college application essay process, including:
The Common App Personal Statement The personal statement is 650 words that travel to every school on your child’s list. It needs to be specific, authentic, and memorable — qualities that are genuinely difficult to achieve without an experienced reader in your corner. Our coaches work with students to identify the right topic, develop their voice, structure the narrative, and refine it through multiple rounds of feedback until it’s the strongest possible version of their story.
College-Specific Supplement Essays Most competitive colleges require supplement essays in addition to the personal statement — some schools require five or more. These range from short “Why This College?” responses to longer essays about intellectual interests, community contributions, and personal identity. Our coaches help students approach each supplement strategically, tailoring the response to what each school is genuinely looking for rather than submitting generic answers across the board.
The Activities Essay and Additional Information Sections The Common App includes shorter writing components that many students overlook — the activities descriptions, the additional information section, and the disciplinary or gap year explanations if applicable. Our coaches help students use every available word count to their advantage.
Editing, Revision, and Deadline Management College essay coaching is an iterative process. Our coaches provide structured, honest feedback at every draft — not just line edits, but substantive guidance on narrative arc, tone, and whether the essay is actually doing the job it needs to do. We also help students manage deadlines across Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision timelines so nothing falls through the cracks.
When to Start
The earlier, the better. Students who begin college essay coaching in the summer before senior year have the most time to explore ideas, write multiple drafts, and revise without deadline pressure. That said, we work with students at every stage — including those who come to us with Early Decision deadlines weeks away. If your child is already in the thick of application season, we can help.
For juniors, starting early means more time for the personal statement and the freedom to take creative risks that produce the most compelling essays.

FAQs:
When should my child start working on their college essays?
The summer before senior year is the ideal time to begin. Starting in June or July gives students the space to explore multiple topic ideas, write freely without deadline pressure, and go through several rounds of revision before Early Decision and Early Action deadlines arrive in October and November. Students who begin early consistently produce more authentic, polished essays than those who start under pressure in September. That said, we work with students at every stage — including those who come to us with deadlines weeks away. If your child is already deep into application season, contact us and we will assess where they are and build a realistic plan around their timeline.
What is the difference between the personal statement and supplement essays?
The personal statement is the 650-word main essay submitted through the Common App that travels to every school on your child’s list. It is their primary opportunity to speak directly to admissions committees as an individual — beyond grades, scores, and activities. Supplement essays are school-specific essays required in addition to the personal statement. They vary widely in length and topic, ranging from short “Why This College?” responses to longer essays about intellectual interests, identity, or community. Some competitive colleges require five or more supplements. Our coaches help students approach both strategically — crafting a personal statement with a strong, specific narrative voice, and tailoring each supplement to what that particular school is genuinely looking for.
Do your college essay coaches write the essay for my child?
No — and this is an important distinction. Our coaches guide your child through the process of finding their own story and developing the craft to tell it well. They ask the right questions, provide structured feedback on drafts, and help your child refine their voice and narrative across multiple revisions. The essay that results is genuinely your child’s — their words, their perspective, their story. Beyond the ethical dimension, admissions committees are experienced readers who can identify when an essay doesn’t sound like the student writing it. Authenticity is not just a virtue in college essay writing; it is a strategic advantage.
How many sessions does college essay coaching typically take?
It depends on where your child starts and how many essays they need to write. For the personal statement alone, most students go through three to five drafts across four to six sessions — from initial brainstorming through the final polish. Students who also need support with supplement essays typically work with their coach over a longer period, particularly if they are applying to several schools with multiple supplements each. We are flexible on structure and work around your child’s school schedule, extracurricular commitments, and application deadlines.
Who are your college essay coaches?
Our lead college essay coach is Allyson Wuerth, who holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from Southern Connecticut State University and an MFA in Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. Allyson has been guiding students through the college essay writing process since 2004 — over two decades of experience helping high school seniors find and articulate the stories that make their applications stand out. As a published poet and recipient of the New England Association of Teachers of English Poet of the Year award, she brings a depth of craft to the coaching process that goes well beyond proofreading. She understands narrative structure, voice development, and how to help a student say something true and specific in a way that resonates with a reader they will never meet.
Can you help with the Common App activities section and additional information section?
Yes. The personal statement and supplements get the most attention, but the Common App includes several other writing components that many students underuse — the activities descriptions, the additional information section, and any disciplinary or gap year explanations if applicable. Each of these is an opportunity to add context, depth, or information that doesn’t fit elsewhere in the application. Our coaches help students use every available word count to their advantage, treating the entire written application as a cohesive document rather than a collection of isolated pieces.
Do you work with students applying Early Decision or Early Action?
Yes. We are experienced working within Early Decision and Early Action timelines, which typically require the personal statement and school-specific supplements to be complete by late October or early November. If your child is pursuing an ED or EA strategy, we recommend beginning essay coaching no later than July to allow enough time for multiple drafts and revisions without compressing the process into a stressful few weeks. Contact us as early as possible so we can build a session schedule around their specific deadlines.
Do you only work with seniors, or can juniors start college essay prep early?
We work with both. For juniors, early engagement with the college essay process — even in an exploratory way — can be genuinely valuable. Reading strong examples, brainstorming potential topics, and beginning to develop a sense of narrative voice before the pressure of senior year arrives makes the writing process significantly smoother when deadlines are real. Some juniors also benefit from working on shorter personal essays for summer program or scholarship applications, which builds the same skills that will serve them on the Common App. If your child is a junior interested in getting a head start, reach out and we will discuss what makes sense for where they are.
